Overnight into early Thursday morning, a winter storm that is expected to be the largest of the season so far started to dump precipitation over Southern California. By daylight, some regions had received half an inch of rain, and residents in the Palisades and Eaton fire burn scar areas were ordered to evacuate.

Meteorologists stated in an early Thursday forecast update that the intensity of the rainfall, not its total amount, is the cause for concern.

In a 3 a.m. update, forecasters stated that “rainfall rates are the main concern as there is a higher probability of rainfall rates exceeding 1 inch per hour due to the increased chance of convective cells, which would very likely cause substantial debris flows if they occurred over a recent burn area.”

According to Ariel Cohen of the National Weather Service, during a morning news conference, a powerful weather system is predicted to pass through between 4 and 9 p.m., bringing with it the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall and major debris flows in regions affected by fire.

According to Cohen, “we’re not going to be sure about significant debris flows occurring until possibly right before they occur,” therefore we should already be considering the “what if” situations.

In anticipation of the storm, officials issued multiple evacuation warnings for people in recent burn zones owing to the possibility of mudslides or debris flows, which resulted in the NWS issuing a flash flood watch for most of Los Angeles County and Orange County until Thursday night.

According to Caltrans, the Pacific Coast Highway was closed to the public in both directions between Chautauqua Blvd. and Carbon Beach Terrace until further notice because of the possibility of mudslides and debris flows. Only critical staff had access on Thursday.

According to Bass, over 6,500 sandbags and more than 7,500 feet of concrete barriers were positioned along the Palisades.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Raquel Sandoval reported that deputies ordered the evacuation of approximately nine residences north of Altadena Drive on Wednesday night.

She declared, “It’s not safe,” adding that deputies had visited the area again Thursday morning to make sure.

A total of 53 workers may be let go or transferred to another Walgreens.
Three Walgreens locations in Orange County and two in Los Angeles County are shutting.

Whittier and downtown Los Angeles are two of the stores’ locations.

The Employment Development Department in California was notified that the closures could result in the loss of at least 93 jobs overall.

Walgreens’ director of media relations, Marty Maloney, stated in an email on Friday that expenses related to staffing, rent, and supply requirements were being impacted by “increased regulatory and reimbursement pressures.”

“Closing a store is never an easy decision,” he wrote. “We are aware of the significance of our stores to the communities we serve.and therefore do everything possible to improve the store performance. When closures are necessary, like those here in California, we will work in partnership with community stakeholders to minimize customer disruptions.”

Maloney said the company intends to redeploy the majority of its affected associates to other stores.

Among the stores closing are:

-Whittier: 11604 Whittier Blvd. is closing on March 20 and may lay off 26 employees.
Los Angeles: closing on March 27 and possibly laying off 27 people W. 7th St. 617.
-Orange: 3237 E. Chapman Ave. is closing on March 25 and may lay off eight employees.
-Placentia: closing at 1201 E. Yorba on March 24 with 19 possible layoffs Linda Boulevard.
-Stanton: closing at 11900 Beach Blvd. on March 26 with 13 possible layoffs.

The closures are permanent, Walgreens stated in its notice to the state. Pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, cashiers, customer service representatives, store managers, and inventory specialists are among the occupations that are impacted.

After Trump’s inauguration, Kamala Harris and Joe Biden travel to California. https://californiareviewstoday.com/2025/01/22/after-trumps-inauguration-kamala-harris-and-joe-biden-travel-to-california/ https://californiareviewstoday.com/2025/01/22/after-trumps-inauguration-kamala-harris-and-joe-biden-travel-to-california/#respond Wed, 22 Jan 2025 18:33:30 +0000 https://californiareviewstoday.com/?p=137

Following President Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris traveled to Southern California.

Harris’ first stop in her home state was Gordy’s Garage, a repair shop in Altadena that is also home to a World Central Kitchen location. Harris and former Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff spoke with fire victims, some of whom had lost everything.

“The work of caring for complete strangers is being done by the volunteers who are there, some of whom lost their own homes,” said Harris.

For their “constant support, for being there on day one and being there for the community,” Harris said, according to Jason Collins, chief relief officer at the World Central Kitchen.

“We are happy to have her after everything they have been through.”

Harris then proceeded to fire station 12, which was the first to arrive at the scene of the Eaton Fire and ultimately found itself on the front lines of the battle.

“The heroes among us are truly exposed during times of crises. Therefore, we simply came out to express our gratitude to them, to the community, and to let them know that they are not alone and that we are all in this together,” Harris added.

L.A. County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone, who praised the crew for having only one day off since the fires started more than a week ago, spent a considerable amount of time talking with the former vice president.

In the meantime, when Trump was sworn in, the Bidens went to Santa Ynez, California.

“We are leaving office — we are not leaving the battle,” Biden told Joint Base Andrews staffers before to his departure.

Biden remarked, “I have been doing this for 50 years; you are the best set of folks.” “Serving as your president has been the greatest honor of my life.”

As Trump proceeded to address his supporters at Emancipation Hall, Biden left.
