On Monday, Governor Gavin Newsom unveiled a new state website that will track funding for homelessness initiatives and provide information on how each county is doing in addressing housing, behavioral health, and homelessness issues.

Additionally, the website displays which counties meet the requirements set forth by the state.

According to the website, the following communities in Los Angeles County are “out of compliance”: Artesia, Carson, Commerce, Compton, Hidden Hills, Irwindale, La Habra Heights, La Mirada, Palos Verdes Estates, San Marino, Vernon, West Covina, and Norwalk.

“Everyone in our country ought to have a place to call home. We anticipate quick fixes, not justifications, as we continue to assist our communities in combating homelessness. There is still more work to be done, even though we are happy with the strides many communities have made in addressing the homelessness epidemic, Newsom said in a statement.

Newsom unveiled the new website along with $118.7 million in funds to help municipalities deal with encampments by building new shelters and providing support. Additionally, three other grants totaling $56.4 million will be awarded to Los Angeles to handle three encampments close to the LA River, Hollywood Boulevard, and the 10 Freeway.

Newsom signed an executive order last July that permitted state and municipal officials to destroy homeless encampments, among other things.

Following a Supreme Court ruling in late June that gave officials the power to dismantle the camps and give tickets to individuals camping in public in Grants Pass, Oregon, the executive order was issued. At the time, some local officials praised the executive order, while others, such as Karen Bass, the mayor of Los Angeles, referred to the action as “unfortunate.”

Although Newsom cannot compel local officials to take action, his administration can exert pressure by denying counties and cities funding.

‘Day 1’ Trump promises. Will he make America Great again? https://californiareviewstoday.com/2025/01/20/day-1-trump-promises-will-he-make-america-great-again/ https://californiareviewstoday.com/2025/01/20/day-1-trump-promises-will-he-make-america-great-again/#respond Mon, 20 Jan 2025 21:32:52 +0000 https://californiareviewstoday.com/?p=115

President-elect Donald Trump pledged to make a huge splash on his first day back in office from the beginning of his campaign to recapture the White House.

Trump stated that he would utilize executive orders on “Day 1” to circumvent the regular legislative process and obtain significant changes to U.S. policy with a single stroke of his pen. He made this claim in a number of early videos detailing his ideas as well as in campaign speeches across the nation.

By signing an executive order alerting federal agencies that, “under the correct interpretation of the law,” children of undocumented immigrants do not automatically obtain citizenship by virtue of their birth on U.S. soil, he pledged to unilaterally overturn the long-standing constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship.

“I will reverse the disastrous effects of Biden’s inflation,” he declared.

Conservative members of Congress have stated that the president-elect plans to act swiftly and forcefully — with their support — and media outlets have reported that over 100 executive orders are in the works. Trump’s promises have long thrilled Republicans and alarmed Democrats, but the excitement has grown ahead of his inauguration on Monday.

“A lot is conceivable, but not on ‘Day 1,'” said Bert Rockman, a professor of political science at Purdue University who is an expert on executive and presidential authority. “Beyond [Trump’s] statements, it is probably impossible to expect that many things would be done immediately.”

Another is the matter of legal challenges. California and other leftist states filed challenges throughout his first term, often preventing Trump from using executive orders to carry out his agenda. California Attorney General Rob Bonta says those states are already getting ready to fight Trump’s agenda again.

High winds and fires cause power interruptions. Here’s how to prepare https://californiareviewstoday.com/2025/01/08/high-winds-and-fires-cause-power-interruptions-heres-how-to-prepare/ https://californiareviewstoday.com/2025/01/08/high-winds-and-fires-cause-power-interruptions-heres-how-to-prepare/#respond Wed, 08 Jan 2025 12:02:00 +0000 https://californiareviewstoday.com/?p=60

The strong wind and extremely dangerous fire weather are causing power disruptions across Southern California. These conditions are predicted to continue through Thursday.

Public safety power shutoffs occur when power utilities purposefully turn off electricity to avert a fire. That’s because some of our most destructive fires in recent years, like the Thomas Fire in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties in 2017, were started by power lines burning dry vegetation.

Of course, severe winds can cause unanticipated outages as fallen trees and other debris knock down power lines.

Here are some recommendations for preparing for a power loss, fire, or other calamity. It’s vital to remember that being prepared for one form of calamity makes you much better prepared for others.

Almost any tragedy necessitates comparable preparation, and it is especially critical to plan for the specific demands you and your loved ones may have in these situations.

Keep a go-bag well equipped with medical and pet supplies in case you need to flee a fire or relocate to somewhere cooler or warmer. An emergency kit should comprise the following basic items:

  • Food, including nonperishables, and a manual can opener.
  • Tap water may not flow if you use an electric pump to transport it.
  • Cash
  • Flashlights and batteries
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Hand-crank the NOAA radio.
  • Learn more about preparing a go-bag here and here.
  • Make sure your car’s petrol tank or battery is at least halfway full, and devise an escape strategy from your neighborhood.
  • Learn how to open any electronic garage doors or gates manually.
  • Identify and physically write down emergency numbers (fire, sheriff, police, hospital, doctor, family, neighbor, coworker).
