A dozen wolves collared in California as officials seek to track the growing population https://californiareviewstoday.com/2025/02/19/a-dozen-wolves-collared-in-california-as-officials-seek-to-track-the-growing-population/ https://californiareviewstoday.com/2025/02/19/a-dozen-wolves-collared-in-california-as-officials-seek-to-track-the-growing-population/#respond Wed, 19 Feb 2025 18:23:08 +0000 https://californiareviewstoday.com/?p=187

In an attempt to better understand and manage the species that has returned to Northern California after being exterminated a century ago, wildlife officials have collared a dozen gray wolves.

The Golden State now has 16 more satellite-collared wolves than ever before, which will allow for better wolf population monitoring.

Although the recovery of the endangered apex predator is celebrated as a conservation success story, there are drawbacks, such as a rise in assaults on cattle and other animals.

In terms of being able to obtain a lot more data, educate a lot more livestock farmers, and do a lot more in-depth study, it’s really opening a lot of doors for us,” stated Axel Hunnicutt.

“The wolves were basically chased down by a contracted helicopter team that followed the radio frequency emitted by the collars, sometimes netting them or darting them from the sky,” Hunnicutt said.

After being transported by air to a base camp, a state team fitted the wolves with satellite collars and performed a workup that involved collecting blood and DNA samples as well as body measurements.

In the end, the animals were driven near the location of their capture and subsequent release.

One of the five wolves taken from Sierra County’s Beyem Seyo pack had previously been collared. Two were taken from the Whaleback pack in Siskiyou County, and five more were taken from the Harvey pack in Lassen County, including one that had previously been collared.

According to Hunnicutt, the quantity of catches was higher than anticipated. Four of the newly collared wolves were adults, and the remaining wolves were either born the previous year or the year before. There were five men and seven women.

According to Hunnicutt, the collars will be used to track the state’s wolf population, which increased from 44 in 2023 to an estimated 70 in the fall of last year.

“It was important to collide a good number of younger wolves,” he stated. Two adults and their young make up the majority of packs; the younger wolves eventually split off and try to start other packs.

A total of 53 workers may be let go or transferred to another Walgreens.
Three Walgreens locations in Orange County and two in Los Angeles County are shutting.

Whittier and downtown Los Angeles are two of the stores’ locations.

The Employment Development Department in California was notified that the closures could result in the loss of at least 93 jobs overall.

Walgreens’ director of media relations, Marty Maloney, stated in an email on Friday that expenses related to staffing, rent, and supply requirements were being impacted by “increased regulatory and reimbursement pressures.”

“Closing a store is never an easy decision,” he wrote. “We are aware of the significance of our stores to the communities we serve.and therefore do everything possible to improve the store performance. When closures are necessary, like those here in California, we will work in partnership with community stakeholders to minimize customer disruptions.”

Maloney said the company intends to redeploy the majority of its affected associates to other stores.

Among the stores closing are:

-Whittier: 11604 Whittier Blvd. is closing on March 20 and may lay off 26 employees.
Los Angeles: closing on March 27 and possibly laying off 27 people W. 7th St. 617.
-Orange: 3237 E. Chapman Ave. is closing on March 25 and may lay off eight employees.
-Placentia: closing at 1201 E. Yorba on March 24 with 19 possible layoffs Linda Boulevard.
-Stanton: closing at 11900 Beach Blvd. on March 26 with 13 possible layoffs.

The closures are permanent, Walgreens stated in its notice to the state. Pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, cashiers, customer service representatives, store managers, and inventory specialists are among the occupations that are impacted.

Aubrey Plaza broke her silence on Monday over the sudden death of her husband, Jeff Baena, calling it a “unimaginable tragedy” and requesting solitude.

Baena, an independent filmmaker, died Friday at his Los Feliz home, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office, who found the cause of death was suicide. He was 47.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy.” Plaza and Baena’s extended family expressed their gratitude to everyone who has shown assistance in a statement shared with The Times. “Please respect our privacy during this time.”

Plaza stepped down from hosting the 82nd Golden Globes in Los Angeles on Sunday evening following Baena’s death.
